"Dark Ballet" (originally titled "Beautiful Game") is a song by Madonna from her fourteenth studio album Madame X. The song was released on June 7, 2019 as the final of five tracks released in the lead up to the album dropping. It was written and produced by Madonna and Mirwais, and contains a sample of "The Nutcracker - Dance of the Reed Pipes".[1]
Background[]
A portion of the song was performed live at the 2018 Met Gala. Graphic artist Aldo Diaz, known for designing the single cover for "Bitch I'm Madonna" shared a photo via Instagram on May 11, 2018 of Madonna headed with the title "Beautiful Game" and captioned with lyrics from the song.[2] Madonna reposted the artwork the following week with the caption "That I never Learned", as well as a hashtag of Mirwais.[3]
The song has been described as "sonically inovative".[4]
Performances[]
Madonna debuted the song at the 2018 Met Gala, when it was known under the title of "Beautiful Game" in a medley with "Like a Prayer" and "Hallelujah".[5] She performed it the following year at the 2019 Eurovision Song Contest in Tel Aviv, Israel.[6] It was also included in Act I of the Madame X Tour.
