Erotica is the fifth studio album by Madonna, released on October 20, 1992 by Maverick and Sire Records. It was released at the same time as her book Sex, which featured explicit photos depicting her sexual fantasies. The album and the book were her first projects under her newly established multimedia company, Maverick. Madonna worked with producers Shep Pettibone and André Betts, who had helped her with earlier hits like "Vogue."
Background[]
The album is considered a concept album, exploring themes of sex and romance during the HIV/AIDS crisis. It includes elements of hip-hop, house, techno, and New Jack Swing, marking a change from her previous dance-focused music.
While Erotica received praise for its boldness, some critics felt the sexual themes overshadowed the music. It peaked at number two on the US Billboard 200 and topped charts in countries like Australia, Finland, and France. Despite being less commercially successful than her earlier work, it sold over six million copies worldwide and was certified double platinum in the US.
The album produced six singles, including the top ten hits "Erotica" and "Deeper and Deeper." Madonna supported the album with The Girlie Show tour in 1993. Initially controversial due to the Sex book, Erotica is now considered one of Madonna’s most important and influential albums.
