"Medellín" is a song by Madonna and Maluma from her fourteenth studio album Madame X. It was released as the lead single from the album on April 17, 2019. The song was written by Madonna, Maluma, Mirwais and Barrers, and produced by Madonna and Mirwais.^[1]

Background[]

After meeting briefly backstage at the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, Maluma sent Madonna flowers the following day, saying what a great honour it was to meet her. She later heard from his manager that he wanted to collaborate with her. She discussed this during an Apple Music Beats 1 interview with Julie Adenuga —

"I told that to Mirwais, and I started listening to his music more closely and like all the reggaeton that he does and thinking "let's do something slightly different but still has like a connection to the music that he makes, and still also connected to Madame X." We started working on music, and he started commenting and adding things and eventually we got into a studio together and he's so great to work with, one of the most easy-going, open, warm, generous, doesn't leave the studio 'til the work is done, has great work ethic, I adore him. Nothing but great things to say about him."^[2]

On February 24, 2019, Madonna and Maluma both shared pictures on social media in the studio together. Madonna captioned her post "Cooking up some Fuego over here!...............🔥🔥🔥!"^[3]^[4]

Live performances[]

Madonna and Maluma performed the song live for the first time at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 1.^[5] The performance featured the appearance of numerous holograms of Madonna in various outfits from the "Medellín" music video.^[6]

Music video[]

The music video for "Medellín" premiered during a globally televised music event by MTV on April 24 which commenced at 9:00pm BST. The video along with a live conversation with Madonna and a fan Q&A session took place at MTV Studios in London^[7], official fan viewing satellite parties were hosted in New York City, Milan, and São Paulo and Maluma made a guest appearance via live stream from Miami.^[8] The video was uploaded to Madonna's official YouTube channel shortly after the live premier. The video was directed by Diana Kunst and Mau Morgó.^[9]
